Working at Avineon Tensing as an Esri Technology Specialist
Charlotte Duynstee joined Avineon Tensing in 2018 in the role of Young Professional. She has developed into a true Esri Technology Specialist over the past few years. In her current role as Entrepreneurial Consultant, Charlotte advises clients in the field of GIS. She does this by using her technical knowledge and experience.
To give a better idea of the role 'Esri Technology Specialist', we interviewed Charlotte about her work at Avineon Tensing.

How did you get into the GIS world?
"GIS appealed to me because of the fact that you are dealing with spatial questions. These spatial questions often have a social character, so you use GIS to give insight into social issues. I find that very important.
As a student, I completed a bachelor's in Architecture and Urban Planning and a master's in Geomatics. During my master, I studied for six months at Wuhan University in China to take remote sensing courses. Through these studies, I prepared myself for a job within the GIS world."
Why did you choose Avineon Tensing after your studies?
" I had already heard positive stories about Avineon Tensing through several fellow students. The Young Professional programme seemed like a good first step in my career. The diversity of clients and the opportunity to learn different things really appealed to me. This way I could find out which role would suit me."
Why did you choose to specialise in Esri's ArcGIS software?
"ArcGIS is a broad platform with enormous possibilities. The platform moves with the market, so there is continuous development. This offers more possibilities for our clients, but I also learn a lot here myself. Our clients use ArcGIS in different ways, so it is never boring for me.
Through Esri, you can obtain certifications of the ArcGIS platform. I have the Esri Desktop Associate certificate and plan to certify further."
Which clients have you already had the opportunity to support?
"That's already a few! I am currently working at Rijkswaterstaat, looking at the impact of the new GIS on the organisation. Before this, I had an assignment at the Province of Noord-Brabant, where I dived into the nitrogen file. For this assignment, I worked a lot with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS StoryMaps. StoryMaps makes it possible to explain a complex story, such as nitrogen, well using maps and other sources of information. I got to present the result at the Esri GIS Conference. It was great fun to share my work with others who work a lot with ArcGIS. View the storymap here.

I also worked at the Evides water company to set up the new ArcGIS Portal. This portal makes all maps available to Evides employees. Besides setting up the portal, I also helped manage the ArcGIS environment.
Other clients I have worked for:
- At Strukton, as Project Manager, I managed a team working on a script to synchronise data to an ArcGIS Portal.
- At ProRail, I worked on FME scripts for rail data.
- At Strukton Shortlines, I helped digitise several railway lines at business parks.
In 5 years, I have already worked with different types of clients and built a nice portfolio!"
What do you find important about a client assignment?
"I think the team you work in is important. The atmosphere within the team often determines how much fun your work is. For me, the theme you work on also plays a big role. My preference is to work on themes such as nitrogen and sustainability."
What do your days with clients look like?
"I am currently working in an Agile Scrum team. This means we start every morning with a meeting with the whole team. Then I start working on content and have several meetings with colleagues to fine-tune things."
What are the benefits for you of working at Avineon Tensing?
"Avineon Tensing is an organisation where knowledge sharing is key. This can already be seen, for example, through the monthly knowledge sessions organised in the Netherlands. Furthermore, you get many opportunities to obtain certifications and develop yourself.
Because we often see each other, also at activities outside work, you quickly get to know your colleagues. And that is nice, because new colleagues regularly join the team.
